Breast Implant Shapes

There are two basic shapes of breast implants used in breast augmentation: round and teardrop. Contrary to popular belief, both may be used to produce a natural looking breast following breast augmentation surgery. Factors such as your aesthetic vision for your body, the placement of the implant, and the ideal location of your incision will help to determine which type of implant should be used.

Round breast implants may be filled with either a saline or silicone or silicone solution and provide a uniformly round shape to the breast. This results in a breast that is fuller on top and projects further from the body; an aesthetic result which many women find appealing.

Teardrop-shaped implants provide a breast that is narrower at the top and fuller at the bottom of the breast. It is believed by many that tear-drop shaped implants will produce a more natural-looking breast, but that is generally untrue. They are only filled with silicone gel and feel a bit softer to the touch than round breast implants.

Placement of Breast Implants

When placing breast implants during breast augmentation, one of the key decisions one must make is whether to place the implant over or under the pectoralis muscle. Implants are usually placed under the muscle if a woman has only a slight amount of breast tissue above the nipple. This provides a more natural shape to the resulting breast and reduces the risk of capsular constriction.

A woman may choose to have the implant placed over the muscle if she is particularly athletic, has a greater amount of breast tissue above the nipple which will aid in concealing the implant, or if she prefers a more discreet look to her breasts following augmentation.

What Size is Right for My Body?

When it comes to selecting the appropriate size implant for your body, bigger may not always be better. Dr. Birely has more than 20 years of experience creating the beautiful, voluptuous breasts that you have been dreaming of. He will assess your body type and the size of your body’s features including your waist, rib cage, and hips as part of his analysis for your breast augmentation.

When you come to our office for your initial consultation, it is a great idea to have photos of women who have breasts like those you seek for yourself. This can help Dr. Birely to determine how he can help you achieve your vision for your new breasts.
