Sagging eyelids, whether hereditary or brought on by aging, can potentially impair your vision. A cosmetic procedure can lend some solutions; Eyelid Surgery can improve and repair vision and appearance.

What Is Eyelid Surgery?

An eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, removes the bulging fat, loose muscle, and excess skin from upper and lower eyelids. This procedure is great for giving you a refreshed appearance, with a younger, firmer-appearing eye area. Eyelid procedures can be performed on upper or lower eyelids, separately, or done together.

In order to keep the scars as invisible as possible, incisions are made within the natural lines and creases of the upper eyelid. Excess fat, muscle, and loose skin are removed to smooth and lift the eyelid. Fine sutures are used to close the incisions, thereby minimizing the visibility of any scar. Dr. Birely will use his experience and expertise to create the best results possible.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

During lower lid surgery, an incision is made along the lash line and “smile creases” of the lower eyelid, or inside the lower eyelid. Excess fat, muscle, and loose skin are trimmed away to reduce under eye bags. In some cases, fatty deposits are repositioned higher in the eye socket to restore a fuller appearance.

Lower lid surgery is more complicated than upper lid surgery, and may require more time. Also, in some cases, Dr. Birely may recommend using a laser or chemical peel with your surgery to reduce any possible discoloration of your lids.

What Should I Expect During Eyelid Surgery Recovery?

Your recovery is extremely important in creating your desired results. Just as during the surgery, Dr. Birely took certain steps, you will now begin taking your own steps towards enjoying your new eyes. Some of these steps will include:

  • Following Dr. Birely’s care instructions
  • Taking or applying pain medication
  • Checking for signs of infection
  • Maintaining hydration
  • Limiting salty foods, as this is said to increase swelling
  • Avoiding too much lid movement

You will be given cold compresses to help alleviate swelling and puffiness during this period. Patients are able to watch television, read, or work at their computer within the next day. Most of your healing will occur within a two week time frame, though some patients experience a shorter or longer recovery period. Complete results of the surgery may take up to a few months for visibility. After this important time period, you can experience more alert, youthful eyes without undesired bags, wrinkles, or skin.
